Leading civil engineering specialists M Lambe Construction has extended its support of Birmingham’s oldest major greyhound racing competition for a fifth year.
First held in 1939, the M Lambe Construction Birmingham Cup celebrates its 51st renewal at Perry Barr Stadium in September, with 36 of the UK’s fastest greyhounds competing for the £12,500 first prize.
The competition was relaunched in 2020 following an 11-year absence and has since been held in memory of Michael Lambe – greyhound enthusiast and founder of M Lambe Construction – who recently passed away.
Previous winners include 1946 English Greyhound Derby champion Mondays News and multiple Category One winner Brookside Richie, who completed a famous Northern Flat-Birmingham Cup double 12 months ago.
Chris Black, general manager at Perry Barr Stadium, said: “The M Lambe Construction Birmingham Cup is one of the highlights of our racing calendar.
“It’s a competition which continually attracts some of the sport’s biggest names and we’re proud to have been host venue since 1939. Our thanks extend to M Lambe Construction for their continued support of the Birmingham Cup which no doubt will serve up another thrilling renewal in the autumn.”
Based in Darley Abbey but operating as far south as Gloucestershire and north as Yorkshire, M Lambe Construction’s services extend to earthworks, foundations, highway constructions and sewers.
The firm was founded in 1983 and prides itself on high standards of service and providing a fulfilling place of employment for its employees.
John Lambe, professional trainer and son of M Lambe Construction founder Michael, came closest to winning the competition held in his father’s memory in 2020 when Dolla Wisecrack was beaten half-a-length by Droopys Carat.
He added: “We’d love to go one better and win the competition for the first time this year, but you always need luck onside.
“My dad loved attending Perry Barr so it’s fitting for M Lambe Construction to sponsor the Birmingham Cup for a fifth year. With its status as a Category One competition, it’s one of the biggest events on the UK greyhound racing calendar and one as a family we’re proud to support.”
Round One of this year’s M Lambe Construction Birmingham Cup will begin on Saturday, September 7, with the £12,500 final scheduled a fortnight later.
The competition will run in unison with the 92nd running of the £20,000 Premier Greyhound Racing St Leger, won last year by 2023 Greyhound Board of Great Britain Greyhound of the Year Droopys Clue.
